Even the CD included with the Collectors Edition of the fifth part had over 20 tracks, in Japan there are completely different collections. And it’s not as if there wasn’t enough material to at least fill the often large empty space at the end. The tracks were picked too wildly, apparently it was about general popularity, which probably fits the best-of motif and of course provides more variety over the playing time of all records. That is all well and good for the main motif, but unfortunately the other motifs of the individual heroes cannot be followed in a similar way. The main motif runs through the years, which was initially an interpretation on expensive synthesizers, quickly transforms into an ever larger orchestra and so you also follow the development of the series through the iterations, comparable to the figures that change over the years in the covers. You won’t find these exceptions here, so you can basically summarize everything: This is the soundtrack with which you conquer castles. Bombast trailer classic at its best and that is a style to which the series has remained true to for over 20 years with a few exceptions. That means a lot of strings, wind instruments and big drums. Interesting are the labels on the records, which are stuck on, but somehow look hot afterwards. It feels valuable, but not as massive as the 180s. If you come to the plates themselves, you have a pure paper sleeve inside without antistatic film, which allows you to reach for the brush directly. The entire design of the box and the cover is very coherent and successful, it is a nice little treasure for fans alone. The back is like that of the box, it always shows the logo and the track list. A nice fan gimmick, but a few lines from the composer or the developer would have been okay too. Mitsurugi has aged a little in between, but seems to be on the mend, Sophitia’s b*****s grew with each part. Each of the seven characters is shown here in all the games in which it appeared and how it has changed. Each is adorned with an interpretation of the character based on the original cover, each has a hero or villain. This one record is by no means used to the maximum, there are always only three tracks per side, six tracks per game, because of course every record is intended for one of the Soul Caliburs – kindly you didn’t forget Soul Blade, this is the seventh record. On the shelf, however, the thing is a real eye-catcher and one of the largest boxes in the gaming soundtrack genre to date.Įach of the seven gatefold sleeves contains only one plate, which is due to the best-of character of the whole. The front of the box is adorned with a medley of the fighters in the series, in the back all tracks are nicely listed, even including the running time, there is only room for a somewhat ugly sword in the middle.
